The founder and first president of the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club, now recognized as the country’s most accomplished club in the sport, has died at the age of 76. A memorial service for Gary Gaines will be held Sept. 26 at Gainesville First Methodist Church.
Gaines, an outdoor enthusiast, was also a founding board member of Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, where he played a guiding role in the river’s healthy restoration, according to his obituary.
In addition, he served on the board of directors of Gainesville’s Friends of the Park and Don Carter State Park.
