FLASH FLOOD WARNING

A Flash Flood Warning has been posted for parts of Lumpkin, White, Union and Towns counties because of heavy overnight rains.

At 1:30 this morning, the National Weather Service (NWS) advised that radar showed thunderstorms in those areas that were producing heavy rain and that 2-3 inches of rain had already fallen. And the expected rainfall rate was 1-2 inches an hour.

"Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly," the advisory said.

Hall County escaped any such weather Saturday and Saturday night despite NWS warnings earlier in the day that flash flooding was possible. In fact, weather service data collected at the Gainesville airport recorded no rain at all yesterday and last night.

Today's forecast for the Gainesville area is for a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly in the afternoon.
