A “fire-breathing” dragon is coming to downtown Gainesville if one local group has its way.
Public Art Gainesville is seeking donations to fund the interactive sculpture which will be located at Roosvelt Square. The permanent display will also include a set of granite walls engraved with the names of donors to the project.
Why a dragon?
“Lake Lanier Olympic Park has been hosting Dragon Boat races since 1998 and has attracted thousands of visitors, rowers, tourists and athletes from around the world,” a posting on Public Art Gainesville’s website says. “Inspired by the cultural and historical significance of the Dragon Boat races on Lake Lanier, we set out to create a piece of interactive public art in the City of Gainesville that is unlike any other. It is bespoke, one-of-a-kind, interactive, historical and innovative.”
The posting says the dragon will awaken each night “from its slumber, putting an awe-inspiring light and smoke show.” Friends of the Dragon — Public Art Gainesville Ga
