*Servando Corona Penaloza, who is a Georgia state prison inmate, has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison for orchestrating the sale of more than 1,000 kilograms of methamphetamine and fentanyl and the purchase of over 200 military-style firearms that were transported to Mexico for use by Mexican cartels. Fourteen other members of Corona Penaloza’s organization have been convicted and sentenced, with two defendants awaiting sentencing in the coming months. (JUSTICE DEPT.)
*With over 9 in 10 Americans agreeing that budgeting should be taught in schools, the personal-finance company WalletHub has released its report on the States With the Best Budgeting Education in High Schools, highlighting where students are best prepared to make smart financial decisions. Georgia ranked 7th overall. WalletHub evaluated all 50 states and the District of Columbia across 11 key metrics, including whether students are required to take a personal-finance course, financial literacy test scores, and overall school rankings. *Eligible taxpayers in Georgia may soon receive their tax rebates. Kemp announced on social media Monday that special tax refunds are on the way, thanks to what he says was common-sense budgeting, over one billion dollars is going back to taxpayers. The Georgia Department of Revenue reportedly started issuing surplus tax refund checks following the March 20th signing of House Bill 1000. Refunds will vary: $250 for single filers, $500 for joint filers, and $375 for heads of household. Eligibility requires filing tax returns for 2024 and 2025 and not owing money to the IRS.
*A man is accused of stealing nearly thousands of dollars from a Columbus little league organization. Officers arrested Craig Norris yesterday for theft by taking and financial transaction card fraud. The 35-year-old was working as the treasurer for Pioneer Little League when he allegedly used the organization’s bank card to make more than 1,000 personal charges. The items totaled nearly $80,000.
