Drought tightens grip on Ga.

The drought that has plagued Georgia off-and-on for several weeks tightened its grip on the state the past week and now covers about two-thirds of Georgia compared to about half of it a week ago, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor (USDM). Its intensity didn’t change much, though.

In our area, “abnormally dry” conditions prevail but for several counties bordering Hall to the north and west and across the rest of northeast Georgia, the conditions are considered a bit worse: “moderately dry.”

Meanwhile, all of the state to the south and east of a line running roughly from the Augusta area to near Macon and down to the Thomasville area are deemed “drought free.”

The level of Lake Lanier continues to go down and is now about three feet below summer full pool.
