The Alpharetta City Council voted Monday night in favor of a plan to redevelop North Point Mall into a mixed‑use area including 20,000-seat arena they hope will attract a National Hockey League (NHL) franchise. The vote was 4-3.
The development also calls for an entertainment district and almost 1,400 apartments.
The Atlanta area has burned through two NHL teams in the past, the Flames and the Thrashers. Both left the city after a few years.
Forsyth County officials are also seeking a hockey team for a new mega development in the Cumming area called The Gathering.

This latest development comes after the would-be developers got a land disturbance permit.
They continue to hope its proposed 18,000-seat arena will attract a NHL franchise, backed by $225 million in contingent county bond financing and strong local hockey fan interest, WSB-TV reports.
