*School districts and universities in Georgia are dealing with the fallout from a cybersecurity breach involving the Canvas learning platform. Officials say the hacking group “ShinyHunters” claimed responsibility for breaching Instructure, the parent company of Canvas. Officials also say the breach exposed names, ID numbers, and email addresses of an estimated 275 million users.
*A massive crash on I-75 in Monroe County yesterday sent 12 people to the hospital, three of them with life-threatening injuries. Authorities said the wreck happened in the southbound lanes shortly before noon and involved over a dozen vehicles, including four 18-wheelers and a bus.
*The GBI is reviewing allegations from a former inmate at the Fulton County Jail. Rashaad Muhammad says he suffered medical neglect that led to the amputation of his lower legs and several fingers. The sheriff reportedly requested that the GBI investigate the matter.
*Calls are mounting for the resignation of Cohutta Mayor Ron Shinnick after he fired the entire police department earlier this week, reportedly in retaliation for complaints about his wife, who was dismissed as town clerk.
*Georgia prison inmates, pretending to be sheriff’s deputies, are scamming South Carolinians. Richland Co. Sheriff Leon Lott says nine inmates at seven Georgia prisons used contraband phones to target families of people arrested. Lott says the prisoners find information about South Carolina arrestees and sheriff staffers online. They then pressure families to pay by pre-paid cards. Lott says no official will ever ask for payment on the phone. One victim says he lost $12,000 to the scammers.
