Habersham County appears to have been the hardest hit county in our area during Tuesday night’s severe weather and was still trying to recover at midday Wednesday. County officials say the storm caused widespread downed trees, power outages and minor damage to some county facilities.
County departments were working to restore services, clear roadways and assess damage. The northern portion of the county sustained the greatest impact, though officials reported no storm‑related injuries or significant structural damage.
Minor damage was reported at the county’s fleet services building and to the dugouts at the parks and recreation department were damaged. The road department reported about 40 roadways were affected by downed trees, power lines or other debris and county officials said complete cleanup across the county could take several weeks.
The National Weather Service had not confirmed whether a tornado touched down. A survey crew is expected to visit Thursday to determine if the damage was caused by a tornado or straight‑line winds.
Internet and phone service was down in some places including several county departments. The tax commissioner’s office closed for the day because it could not process transactions.
