Complaints about charge for removing vehicles abandoned on roadsides during snowstorm

(GEORGIA NEWS NETWORK) – Some drivers in Hall County are a bit miffed after being charged high fees to retrieve their cars towed during the winter storms.

Some say they feel exploited by the situation, with Kellie James’ daughter’s car being towed less than 24 hours after bystanders helped move it to the shoulder for safety.

The sheriff’s office tells Fox5 Atlanta 31 cars were towed due to abandoned vehicles blocking emergency vehicle access. The sheriff’s offices says that, even though some cars were moved to the shoulder, they were still in the right-of-way, blocking emergency vehicle access. “Emergency vehicles were unable to adequately access the roads to make them safe for travel,” a spokesman said.

Deputies there say drivers are advised to completely move their cars off the road and report the situation to county dispatchers in case of emergencies.

In Gwinnett County, many abandoned cars were towed to the police station free of charge.
