A candidate seeking the State Senate District 47 seat in this year’s General Election is off the campaign trail – at least for now. Instead, he’s sitting in a jail cell.
Justin Grant Gillespie was convicted ten days ago of cruelty to children and battery in a bench trial in Madison County Superior Court. Gillespie is the Democratic nominee for the district that includes parts of Jackson, Barrow, Clarke, Madison counties. He was given a seven-year sentence with two to be served and the rest on probation.
And, for now, at least, has name will remain on the ballot because the ballots have already been printed though the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office is still looking investigating.
