Burglary-in-progress call leads to arrest

Habersham County authorities Friday released information on a burglary-in-progress call Wednesday that resulted in one arrest.

HABERSHAM CO. SHERIFF’S OFFICE NEWS RELEASE:

“…at approximately of 10 a.m., deputies
from the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office received a call via Habersham
County E-911 of a burglary involving forced entry into a residential dwelling
located in the vicinity of northern New Liberty Road.

Officers responded to the incident location and discovered a residence
with obvious signs of forced entry. Arriving officers entered the residence
and found further evidence that a burglary had occurred there. An interior
search of the residence, and a perimeter search of the surrounding curtilage,
indicated that the perpetrator(s) had already fled the area.

While on the scene, initial arriving officers made contact with other
responding officers and relayed the information regarding the suspect no
longer being at the dwelling. After receiving this information, another
Habersham County deputy observed a gold Ford Ranger parked in a
suspicious manner on the northern end of New Liberty Road, with a white
male outside the vehicle.

That officer turned around in an attempt to speak
to the male, but the male re-entered the vehicle and fled the location.
Deputies were able to locate the vehicle and perform a traffic stop for further
investigation of the suspicious behavior. Upon approach to the vehicle,
deputies were able to visually observe particular articles relating to the
crime. The articles in question were located in plain view in the bed of the
Ford Ranger truck.

Officers subsequently made contact with the driver of the truck and
identified him as 34-year-old Dusty Everett Banfield. After identifying Banfield, deputies conducted an inquiry via GCIC/NCIC and discovered that Mr. Banfield had an active warrant for his arrest.
Banfield was placed under arrest for the active warrant and subsequently
detained for further investigation relating to the burglary that had just been
reported.

Through further investigation, it was determined that probable cause existed
to link Banfield to the burglary that had just recently occurred. After making
the arrest, Banfield was transported to the Habersham County Detention
Center and all stolen property was recovered from the vehicle and
transported to the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office’s Criminal Investigative
Division for evidentiary purposes.”
