The Gainesville Gol’Diggers successfully defended their Sun Belt League championship by completing a 2-game sweep of the Columbus Chatt-a-hoots for their second straight Sun Belt League championship. The Gol’Diggers (24-9) beat Columbus 8-5 on the road Wednesday and 4-0 Friday night at Ivey-Watson Field in Gainesville. Three Gol’Diggers pitchers combined for the 3-hit shutout Friday as Maddox Thornton picked up the win in relief. The Gol’Diggers scored 2 runs in the 4th inning and 2 more in the 7th inning as playoff MVP Corey Collins smacked a solo home run in the 4th inning for the only run Gainesville needed to win the championship.
