UPDATE: Man shot by Hall deputy in Lumpkin Co.

5:15 P.M. UPDATE:

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has taken the lead in an investigation of an officer-
involved shooting involving a Hall County sheriff’s deputy Friday. The incident happened just after 9:45 a.m. at a location on Emory Stephens Road in Lumpkin County just north of the Hall County line.

Hall County deputies and investigators had traveled to a residence to execute a search warrant on the property. The Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office and the GBI were assisting.

“Law enforcement encountered an adult man inside a vehicle on the property and determined he had an active arrest warrant,” Hall County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman B.J. Williams said late Friday afternoon. “When deputies attempted to arrest him, he fled from the scene in his vehicle, crashing the car a short
distance from the residence.”

As a Hall County deputy approached the wrecked vehicle, the man emerged from the car pointing a
weapon at the officer, Williams said. “The deputy discharged his weapon, striking the suspect,” who was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville where he was hospitalized.

The deputy was not injured. Per agency policy, he has been placed on administrative leave with
pay while the GBI investigation is underway.

ORIGINAL STORY. POSTED 4:00 P.M.:

Details remained sketchy at mid-afternoon Friday concerning an officer-involved shooting that occurred just a few hours earlier in Lumpkin County.

Lumpkin sheriff Stacy Jarrard said in a social media post that it happened in the Georgia 51/Emory Stephens Road area and involved not only his department but the Hall County Sheriff’s Office as well.

The GBI, as is the case with such incidents in Georgia, will be investigating.
