Bomb threat arrest; Voter registration deadline; Missing swimmers; Another record-setting year

*A New York man is facing federal charges after authorities say he sent a false bomb threat to Georgia Power. Prosecutors accuse 23-year-old Joseph Leone of Erie, New York, of sending an Instagram message in April claiming he had planted an explosive device inside company headquarters. WGRZ reports the threat triggered evacuations, lockdowns and bomb squad searches at Georgia Power facilities in Atlanta and Savannah before investigators determined the threat was a hoax.

*Georgians have until midnight tonight to register to vote or update their registration for the November 3 elections. The next major milestone in this election cycle is early voting, which begins October 13 and runs through October 30. Election officials are encouraging voters to verify their registration status now to avoid any last-minute issues. 

*A multi-agency search off the Georgia coast has ended with a positive outcome. WSAV reports two swimmers who were reported missing Saturday night after attempting to swim from Tybee Island to Cockspur Island were found safe and uninjured. The Coast Guard and Savannah Fire located the pair on Long Island and transported them back to Tybee.  

*Georgia has set a tourism record for the fourth straight year. WSB-TV reports the state welcomed a record 175.6 million visitors in 2025, generating $46.2 billion in spending at hotels, restaurants and attractions. Tourism officials say the industry produced $5.3 billion in state and local tax revenue and supported nearly 474,000 jobs. Governor Brian Kemp says Georgia remains the nation’s fifth-ranked state for domestic overnight travel.
