For 52 years, the state patrol post in Athens has served five northeast Georgia counties, including Jackson and Barrow. But no more. In fact, there is no longer an Athens post. It’s been relocated to Oconee County.
An official opening of the new facility was held earlier this week.
In addition to serving as home for the 15 state troopers who serve Barrow, Jackson, Oconee, Madison and Clarke counties, it will also house the Department of Driver Services (DDS) for the region and eventually a GBI regional office.
