*A family is being awarded millions of dollars for the death of a man in a south Georgia nursing home. Norcross-based PruittHealth was ordered by a jury to pay over $23 million in connection with the March 2021 death of John Owens, Jr. His sons argued his health deteriorated when the staff at a nursing home in Fitzgerald gave the 76-year-old unprescribed medications.
*A man is accused of damaging or destroying at least four Flock cameras in Cobb County. He reportedly fired projectiles at several of the cameras that caused them to melt. The arrest warrant shows the suspect targeted cameras at East Cobb Park and a Home Depot two miles away. He’s been in jail since yesterday without bond.
*Georgia election officials are being advised to carry on with normal absentee ballot procedures despite an executive order by President Trump. An effort to change mail-in procedures from the federal level has been blocked for now by a judge. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has advised counties to remain focused on current election preparations. Military and overseas ballots start going out on September 15.
* Everton Blair Jr. has been sworn in as the newest and first openly gay member of Congress from Georgia. Representing the 13th Congressional District, vacated by the death of David Scott in April, he also becomes the second-youngest current member of the House.
