State Sen. Drew Echols (R-Lula) said Tuesday he’s committed to finding the middle ground of public safety and protecting privacy when it comes to License Plate Readers (LPR) such as Flock.
Echols commented shortly after it was announced that three more Hall County sheriff’s deputies have resigned after being charged with misusing the system. (See separate story.) They are among the latest Georgia law enforcement officers to lose their jobs recently over the misuse of LPRs.
“Flock cameras are ripe for abuse, and we need checks and balances to prevent further distrust,” Echols said. “I understand fully that these cameras are a huge help to law enforcement to catch criminals and keep our community safe.
“When used correctly, they save lives and crack cold cases. Abused, they are the equivalent to a gun. Public trust must always be preserved.”
