Annexation/rezoning requests, tax rates on city council agenda

As Gainesville’s mayor and city council prepare for their next meeting on Tuesday, the agenda focuses on proposed tax measures for the upcoming fiscal year and two public hearings involving annexation and zoning requests. The meeting begins at 5:30 at the city’s Public Safety Complex on Queen City Parkway.

Council members will review several items tied to ad valorem tax rates. One measure sets the general government rate, separate from those used to fund schools, parks and recreation, and police and fire services. Additional proposals outline the dedicated tax rates for each of those service areas, including the Gainesville Board of Education.

Two annexation and zoning matters are scheduled for public comment.

The first request comes from Majors Management, which seeks to annex about 2.19 acres at the northwest corner of Athens Highway and Monroe Drive. The company is asking for a General Business zoning designation to allow construction of a convenience store with gas sales.

The second is from Moez Hasni, who is seeking to annex roughly 0.98 acres at the northwest corner of Jesse Jewell Parkway and Crescent Drive. The proposal includes a request for General Business zoning to develop a retail strip center.

Also, up for consideration: Reappointing Aimee Hoecker, Jillian Ledford, and Pamela Williams-Lane to the Main Street Advisory Board and the appointment of “Moe” Lyons to that panel. And the appointment of Lize Coates and Jennifer Finlayson to the Parks and Recreation Foundation Board.
