Declaring in a Facebook post “Some buildings change a campus. This one will help shape its future,” the University of North Georgia (UNG) recently opened a building school officials say marks the next chapter for the UNG Corps of Cadets.
UNG President Michael P. Shannon joined university leaders, donors and guests for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the completion of the new facility, which will begin serving cadets with the start of this year’s Fall semester.
It is the first of three planned facilities intended to modernize and consolidate support functions for UNG’s Corps of Cadets.
UNG received $8.3 million in state funding for its design and construction after raising an additional five million in private donations.
It is named in honor of the Wynne-Mathews family, recognizing eight family members who either attended UNG or served in the U.S. armed forces. It also honors the late Mary Joan Wynne Mathews, the wife of alumnus and Army ROTC Hall of Fame member Bob Mathews.
