The recall effort was launched by Hall County Concerned Citizens because of the arrest of the sheriff on a DUI charge earlier this year and his pending trial in that case. The group needs the verified signatures of 42,080 registered voters to force a vote on whether Couch should remain in office.

He reacted to the launch of the recall movement with a statement issued through his attorney in July.

“Sheriff Couch has deep respect for the democratic process and the right of every citizen to hold their elected officials accountable. That right is a cornerstone of our great democracy, and he does not take it for granted. At the same time, the Sheriff remains fully confident in the work of his office and in his ability to continue serving as Sheriff of Hall County.”
