A national blood crisis has been declared by the American Red Cross for only the second time in the organization’s history, as donations fall to a four‑year summer low and hospitals begin to feel the strain. And another round of blood drives has been scheduled including several in Hall County:

The Red Cross reports that all blood types are urgently needed, with the shortage most severe for type O blood. Distributions of type O products to hospitals are now being limited, and the supply of type O positive blood has dropped below a one‑day level — a threshold that can delay critical care for trauma patients and those undergoing emergency surgeries.
The organization is urging donors to act immediately to help stabilize the nation’s blood supply. Appointments to give blood can be made through the Blood Donor App, at RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1‑800‑RED CROSS. As an incentive, donors who give by July 31 will receive a Fandango Movie Ticket by email valued at up to $15. Details are available at RedCrossBlood.org/July.
The Red Cross says additional donor thank‑you gifts will be offered for those who give blood between Aug. 1 and Aug. 31, 2026, as part of its ongoing effort to boost donations during the summer months, when collections typically decline.
