A motorist was arrested Thursday night after authorities say he led Habersham County sheriff’s deputies and other officers on a chase through Demorest and Cornelia.
The pursuit began around 7:30 when a deputy attempted to stop a pickup on Central Avenue in Demorest for a traffic violation. According to the sheriff’s office, the driver initially pulled into a Piedmont University parking lot across from the main campus, then sped away, prompting the chase.
Deputies followed the truck onto Ga. 365 and then onto U.S. 441 Bypass in Cornelia. The pursuit ended when officers used a PIT maneuver near Baldwin Road and the Georgia Power facility, bringing the vehicle to a stop.
No injuries were reported and the driver was arrested on traffic and drug charges. His name and the list of charges were not immediately available.
Southbound lanes of the bypass were temporarily closed during the incident.
