With the new school year just around the corner, Jefferson High School is taking a proactive approach to educating parents and students alike about the new statewide ban on cellphones and other devices effective in high schools starting this fall. Such a prohibition already applies to K-8 schools.
The new policy requires students to keep phones and other electronics powered off and stored in backpacks from 8:06 a.m. to 3:25 p.m.
The rule applies to cellphones, smartwatches, headphones and similar devices. School officials said in a social media posting staff will collect any device that is seen, heard or used during the school day. Parents or guardians must retrieve confiscated items after dismissal.
Administrators emphasized that families still have ways to communicate in urgent situations. Anyone needing to reach a student during school hours should call the front office. Students with urgent needs may also request to use the office phone.
Clarifications from the school
- Cancellations and schedule changes will be shared through ParentSquare, Infinite Campus Messenger, school intercoms and on‑campus TV screens.
- Lunch periods remain part of the bell‑to‑bell window, meaning phones are not permitted and will be taken if visible.
- Vending machine purchases must be made before 8:06 a.m. or completed without a phone, as devices cannot be used during the school day.
The law enacting the policy and signed by Gov. Kemp in Maay is designed to reduce distractions and keep students focused on instruction.
