A 29-year-old man is being held without bond following his arrest Tuesday in connection with a shooting last December in north Gainesville. Hivan Villaverde-Viera is charged with aggravated assault.
“This is a December 26, 2025 shooting case,” Gainesville Police spokesman Kevin Holbrook wrote in an email. “At around 2AM police responded to a shooting in the vicinity of Parkhill Drive and South Enota Drive.
“Police found a white van stopped in the roadway. The driver, Joel Alcantara-Vill was shot in the face and transported to the hospital. He did survive the injuries.”
Capt. Holbrook said warrants were issued in March and Villaverde-Viera just arrested. He said he did not know the circumstances surrounding the arrest because Gainesville Police did not make it.
But a spokesman for the Hall County Sheriff’s Office says one of their deputies took him into custody at the courthouse on the city’s warrant. Derreck Booth added that Villaverde-Viera was there for an unrelated case.
