Faced with what it calls “an alarming drop” in its blood supply, the Red Coss has scheduled a number of special donations this month, including three in Hall County and several more in adjoining counties.
The national supply fell nearly 25% in June, officials say, creating a serious shortage of platelets and types O positive and B negative blood.
Donations have declined steeply since late May, they add, widening the gap between supply and patient need. Red Cross distributions to hospitals are currently about 3,500 units higher per week than expected, coinciding with the summer trauma season when demand for blood products often rises.
