Rallying to save Green St.

A block party is planned next week by a group of people organized to battle the state Department of Transportation (GDOT) and its plans to reconstruct Gainesville’s Green Street at the expense of some of the trees that line the historic boulevard.

It will be held July 17, 4:00-7:00, at The Spa on Green Street, according to a Facebook post by Frank Norton, whose insurance and real estate office is located on the street.

It will feature music by Past Our Prime, food and other refreshments, and “family friendly” activities.

Billed as a “celebration of community, history and our beautiful trees,” anyone and everyone is invited to attend “whether you’ve lived here for years or are visiting for the first time…

Bring a lawn chair and help us save Green Street! Every street has a story. Let’s make sure Green Street’s continues. Learn how you can help protect historic Green Street.”

A “Save Green Street” petition that was started in April had garnered 4,173 signatures by early this afternoon.
