*Here’s something that probably slipped by most of us outside Habersham County: when all the votes for the Republican nomination for governor were counted following the May 19 Republican Primary, Rick Jackson and Burt Jones were tied with 2,640 votes each in the county, according to the AJC.
*The Gainesville (Fla.) Sun reports that the town’s First Baptist Church is cutting its ties with the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) over policies restricting women from serving in ministry and pastoral leadership, something our town’s First Baptist die several years ago. The SBC is wrapping up its annual conference in Orlando today.
*The accused Apalachee High School shooter could be going to trial for murder this fall. Georgia News Network reports a Barrow County judge set a tentative date Tuesday for October 12, when Colt Gray will face dozens of charges connected to the killing of four people. Two students and two teachers were shot to death at the high school in September 2024. The trial is likely to be moved out of Barrow County.
