Little damage from Friday’s storm; Round 2 today?

Hall County suffered little damage from the strong storm that swept through parts of the county Friday afternoon, and we may be in for more of the same today.

“We have had a few trees down with power line involvement but nothing major,” says Zach Brackett, the county’s Emergency Management and Homeland Security Director.

The system pounded the area with heavy rains, frequent lightning, and strong, gusty winds.

Elsewhere in the area, the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office says the county jail was hit by lightning Friday afternoon, knocking out the facility’s telephone and internet service for a time.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service (NWS) says we are at Level 2 for more of the same today.

“Scattered thunderstorms developing from late morning through the evening could become strong to severe, and capable of producing damaging wind gusts across North and Central Georgia,” the latest advisory says.

And looking ahead at the remainder of the holiday weekend, forecasters say there’s a 50% chance of rain Sunday and a 90% chance Monday in the Gainesville area.
