*Georgia’s gas tax suspension expires one week from today, as President Trump considers suspending the federal gas tax. Drivers continue to see soaring prices at the pump as the war in Iran stretches on. And once Georgia’s gas tax suspension ends on May 19, assuming Gov. Kemp doesn’t extend it, the cost will be even higher. However, President Trump said on Monday that he’s looking at suspending the federal gas tax. But suspending the tax that adds about 18 cents per gallon requires an act of Congress. Georgia’s tax is 33.1 cents a gallon.
*Two infected passengers evacuated from the cruise ship stricken by a deadly hantavirus outbreak are now in Georgia. The two were flown into Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Monday morning and taken by ambulance to Emory University Hospital. They arrived from the National Quarantine Unit at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
*As Atlanta continues preparations for the upcoming World Cup matches, the grass is greener at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Natural grass is being installed in stadiums across the U.S. ahead of this summer’s World Cup matches, including the Benz in downtown Atlanta. The original turf has been replaced with a hybrid blue-rye grass mixture, supported by a vacuum airflow and underground irrigation system. Due to the stadium’s roof not allowing proper sunlight, artificial grow lights are being used. FIFA, soccer’s governing organization, rules require the real deal at the 16 venues being used for the 2026 games. Atlanta will host eight matches starting June 15, culminating in a semi-final a month later.
*The cause of a fire at a metro Atlanta area apartment complex that left 70 people homeless, is under investigation. Crews in Chamblee responded to the Windsor Parkview apartments on Sunday afternoon. No injuries were reported. The fire apparently started on the roof.
