Commerce battery plant laying off nearly 1,000

A battery plant in Commerce is laying off a third of its workforce.

SK Battery America notified the state Friday that 958 employees are losing their jobs. Total employment at the plant, which makes batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), is 2,566. The layoffs were effective Friday, but company officials say those workers will be paid through May 6.

The White House has removed tax incentives for both owners and manufacturers of EVs.

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, a U.S. Department of Labor law, that requires most employers with 100 or more employees to provide 60-day notifications of planned closings and mass layoffs.
