Loaded gun found on student at Myers ES

A student at Myers Elementary School was found with a loaded gun at the school this morning.

“The student in question was searched immediately, the weapon was confiscated without
incident, and the school resource officer was notified,” Hall County Schools spokesman Stan Lewis said, adding that “the school is under normal operations.

“At this time, district officials and law enforcement have no indication that the student brought
the gun to school with the intent to harm himself or others. That said, school and district
officials are working with the Hall County Sheriff’s Office to ensure the safety of both students
and staff in moving forward.”

A spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office confirmed that the gun was loaded.

“The principal searched the student, confiscated the handgun, alerted the school resource officer and escorted the child to the school office,” B.J. Williams said. “The school resource officer secured the firearm, which had a loaded magazine but no round in the chamber. Investigators with the
sheriff’s office responded to the campus to begin an investigation.”
