New year brings surge in home building activity

More than 30 permits were issued in January for new, single-family homes in Gainesville, according to the monthly report from the city’s Building Inspection Department (BID).

The report shows there were 33 such permits approved for construction expected to cost $17.8 million. In addition, there were nine permits okayed for residential remodeling and additions equaling $649,000.

Commercial/industrial activity was much slower with three permits worth $1.3 million issued for new construction. Total commercial/construction activity during January totaled $4.8 million for 82 permits.
