Icing increasing

While parts of metro Atlanta and areas along 1-20 slowly warmed above freezing this afternoon, much of northeast Georgia, including the Gainesville area, remained below freezing as heavier precipitation moved in from the west.

This has produced a noticeable increase in icing on roads, trees, shrubbery, etc. – just as the weather service and others had predicted.

A mid-afternoon weather service advisory says additional freezing rain accumulations of 0.25 0.50 inches are expected in these areas. (See accompanying illustration.) “Power outages will increase and road conditions will deteriorate significantly.
