Education bills at a glance; Ga. Power rate reduction planned; Targeting ICE

*New education bills are moving through the legislature to help keep kids safer and more focused at school. One bill would ban cellphones in high schools. They are already a “no-no” in elementary schools.  Another proposal would require gun safety education starting as early as kindergarten. The bill’s sponsor says it’s best to “teach them young.”

*Georgia Power says it will be lowering rates for customers this summer. The company’s CEO, Kim Greene, says Georgia Power plans to submit filings next month to state regulators to collectively lower rates beginning in June of this year. The company has not disclosed exactly how much lower the rates will be or for how long the new rates will be available.  

*Two speakers at Monday’s King Day observance at the Atlanta church he once pastored lashed out at President Trump’s deployment of federal agents to Minnesota, according to the AJC. Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.), who is the church’s current pastor, and King’s daughter, Bernice King, both mentioned Renee Nicole Good, the 37-year-old woman who was shot and killed earlier this month by an ICE agent in Minneapolis.
