A funeral service will be held Monday in Williamsburg, Va., for retired Gainesville businessman and civic leader Tom Mundy. He and his wife had lived in Williamsburg for the past year and a half.
Mundy, 84, was a native of Raleigh, N.C. He and his family moved to Gainesville after graduating from Wake Forest University and serving two years in the Army. He went to work at First National Bank but soon afterward bought a small local mattress business (Gainesville Mattress Company), which he renamed American Bedding Company and expanded into a supplier of bedding throughout the Southeast.
As member of Grace Episcopal Church, Mundy served on the church vestry for many years. He was a member of the Gainesville Jaycees, and later the Gainesville Rotary Club and was a strong supporter of the Boys & Girls Clubs in Gainesville and of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis.
