Dahlonega seeks public’s help in combating water thefts

Each year, the City of Dahlonega and its rate paying customers are the victims of thousands of gallons of water stolen from hydrants and unmetered connections, an alert from city officials says.

“The city has invested millions of dollars to ensure our customers are provided safe, clean, and reliable drinking water,” the message continues. “(But) when water is illegally taken from hydrants and other unprotected connections, there is a risk of contamination to our water supply and a reduction in pressure required for fire protection. Opening and closing a fire hydrant too quickly can cause damage to nearby water mains causing our customers to be without water. Since our water utility is non-profit, money spent to treat stolen water and repair damage from unauthorized use must be recouped from rate paying customers.”

How to spot theft?

Water is most often taken from hydrants using a hose without a metered connection. A permit is required to take water from a hydrant, and a hydrant meter must be used to ensure our water supply is not contaminated.

“If you see someone taking water from a hydrant other than the City of Dahlonega or Lumpkin County Emergency Services, it is best to report it so we can investigate,” city officials say.

If you suspect water is being stolen, please call 706-864-6133 during normal business hours. After 5 pm and weekends/holidays, please call 706-864-3633.

Contractors who need water should obtain a permit at City Hall. Withdrawing water without a permit carries a $500 fine per occurrence.
