Scams & scam alerts

*An alleged scammer who reportedly conned a Lumpkin County employee out of almost $400,000 has been arrested in Orlando, Florida. The Dahlonega Nugget quotes Lumpkin Sheriff Stacy Jarrard as saying the arrest was made after an extensive investigation which led to the money in the suspect’s bank account. No other information was immediately available.

And this was one of the most notorious cases. Others involved far less money usually and resulted in no arrests to date.

*Then there’s the warning from the Banks County Sheriff’s Office about a scam specifically targeting children. The sheriff’s office said sextortion scams that target high school-aged youths are becoming more common and can lead to “significant emotional distress.” Thes cases usually involve someone asking the victim to share explicit photos or videos. Once shared, the scammer threatens to post or send the content to friends and family unless the teen pays money or provides more images.
