HCSO: Arrest made in funeral home scam

HCSO NARRATIVE:

“An inmate at the Calhoun State Prison in southwest Georgia has been transported to the Hall County Jail to face charges in connection with a funeral home scam.

Mark Anthony Rosas, 42, was booked at the jail on Saturday…on felony charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and criminal attempt. He is being held on a bond of $11,400.

On April 17…the Hall County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) began an investigation after a Gillsville woman contacted the agency to report she had received a phone call from someone claiming to represent a local funeral home that was handling funeral arrangements for her husband. The caller demanded a $1,200 liability insurance payment or else the funeral would be delayed. The victim paid the money through Zelle over the phone. When the victim contacted the funeral home later in the day about the call, the funeral home informed her they had made no such call.

The case was turned over to HCSO property crimes investigators. Over the next several weeks, investigators were able to track the phone call and fraudulent transaction back to Mr. Rosas, who was in prison at the time he committed the crime. Investigators obtained a warrant for the suspect’s arrest on May 30.

Other arrests are pending in the case.”
