Cumming Mayor Troy Brumbalow minced no words in expressing his disdain for the vandals who recently struck the city’s veterans park while lashing out those who posted pictures of the vandalism on social media while accusing the city of having the flags lowered.
“This photo posted on social media last week sparked outrage by many saying the city was being disrespectful to veterans,” Mayor Brumbalow said in his own social media post. “Stop and think for a moment. Why would the city spend tens of thousands of dollars to build a beautiful veterans memorial to then disrespect the people it honors? In fact, the person that cares for the flags grew up on an Air Force base and is married to a Marine veteran. The flags were back in order probably before this photo was even posted online.
The mayor said that in addition to tampering with the flags, the vandals smashed three lights used to illuminate the flags. “This was a blatant act of VANDALISM!” he wrote.
Brumbalow said he has ordered high-definition cameras to be placed at the memorial and “I pray this horrendous act doesn’t happen again.”
