GEORGIA DEPT. OF TRANSPORTATION NEWS RELEASE:
“…Georgia DOT and contractor E.R. Snell are planning to begin construction on a new bridge at State Route (SR) 136/Price Road which will replace the 68-year-old crossing located at Toto Creek. Preliminary construction work will begin on October 23…weather permitting.
Toto Creek bridge is steel stringer bridge that was built in 1956 by the US Army Corps of Engineers. It was designed by consulting engineer Patchen & Zimmerman of Augusta. Steel stringer bridges were favored for their economies of initial cost, construction and maintenance, and they dominated pre-1966 bridge construction in Georgia and the nation. This bridge is typical of the hundreds of nearly identical replacement stringer bridges built by the state highway department from the 1920s to 1966 as part of their improvement of the state highway system.
Traffic through the area will continue until removal of the old bridge which begins in 2024. A detour will be established to SR 400. A temporary traffic light will be installed at the intersection of Henry Grady Parkway and SR 400 in the interim to manage traffic.
Full bridge closure is tentatively scheduled for February 2024. Once the new bridge is complete, the roadway will reopen. The completion date of the overall project is scheduled for November 2024.
Traffic delays are anticipated. Consider SR 53 as an alternate route to access Gainesville and Hall County. Always slow down upon entering a work zone and be cognizant of posted speed limits.”
