Accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound leads to more serious charges

A 36-year-old man who says he accidentally shot himself almost a month ago now finds himself charged with carrying a gun in a school safety zone.

Adrian Gonzalez-Vilchez is also charged with reckless conduct, discharging a firearm while under the influence, and public drunkenness. And he has been placed on immigration “hold.”

“On September 30…police responded to 1100 block of McEver Road (near Gainesville Exploration Academy) for an accidental shooting,” Gainesville Police spokesman Kevin Holbrook wrote in an email Thursday. “Gonzalez-Vilchez did have a gunshot wound to the foot. He was intoxicated at the time of the incident and could not provide much information.”

Capt. Holbrook said police used dogs to search the area and found a gun in the vicinity.

Gonzalez-Vilchez is being held without bond in the Hall County Jail.
