Landlord charged in $8,000 theft from tenant

A 57-year-old Gainesville man is free on bonds totaling $5,700 following his recent arrest on charges that he stole items worth $8,000 from a man who had rented a room from him.

HCSO NARRATIVE:

“James Monroe Thorn, Jr….was arrested last week at his residence off Price Road for the theft of a wooden shed and its contents.

According to an investigation by Hall County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) property crimes investigators, the shed belonged to a man who had rented a room from Mr. Thorn. The victim had lived at the residence sporadically while working in South Carolina. The 12 X 24 shed contained tools and other personal property belonging to the victim…

Investigators determined Mr. Thorn dismantled the shed and removed it from the property. The theft occurred between July 17…and Sept. 20…

Investigators obtained an arrest warrant for a single felony count of theft by taking. HCSO Warrant Service Unit deputies arrested Mr. Thorn on Friday….”
