NWS: SE can breathe a sigh of relief

“Tropical Storm Imelda will bring no direct impacts to north and central Georgia and is forecast to remain offshore the Atlantic coast of the U.S.,” the National Weather Service (NWS) declared late Sunday. Earlier in the day, forecasters had said there was a “increasing” chance this would be the case because the storm was expected to make a sharp turn to the east.

“There is increasing confidence that impacts to north and central Georgia from the system will be minimal.” That’s the latest Tropical Depression Nine assessment from the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Peachtree City.

“(It) is expected become Tropical Storm Imelda later on today (Sunday). This system will strengthen and move north as it approaches and then moves away from the Southeast coast from early to mid-week.

“The current track could bring some isolated showers to the area Monday and Tuesday with breezy, easterly winds throughout the week.”

Mostly dry conditions are expected the rest of the week with temperatures starting out above normal but cooling down to near normal during the second half of the week.
