Wildfires continue in NW Ga.; one arson arrest reported elsewhere

Another week, another week of battling wildfires in northwest Georgia.

So far this week, the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) has responded to at least six #wildfires that burned 378 acres in that part of the state.

The Draught Street Fire in Walker County is now 50% contained. 79 homes are threatened, 10 have been damaged and three homes were destroyed. GFC has been on the scene since the fire started earlier this week and continues to work towards containing it.

Meanwhile, in another part of the state, a Talbot County man has been jailed on felony arson charges. 52-year-old William Shane Harvey, of Box Springs, was arrested by law enforcement officers from the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) and the Talbot County Sherriff’s Office earlier this month.

Harvey was taken into custody near the location of a 108-acre wildfire, which he is accused of deliberately setting. While no injuries were reported, the fire destroyed two outbuildings, two residences incurred damage, and 11 victims reported property damage. According to GFC investigators, the suspect was arrested without incident and charged with Arson of Lands. The violation carries a penalty of up to a $50,000 fine or one to 20 years in prison.
