North Georgia can should be on the alert for strong, gusty winds, more wildfires, and stormy weather today, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The agency has issued alerts for all three for north Georgia and some for other parts of the state.
A Wind Advisory calls for winds 15-25 mph with gusts to 45 mph through Wednesday morning. Higher gusts are possible across highest ridgetops in north Georgia.
And those winds, coupled with low humidities, are conducive to more wildfires today. Already, thousands of acres have burned across north Georgia the past few days, fed by strong winds and dry conditions. EARLIER STORY. The winds will also be ushering in a strong storm system which should move through north Georgia overnight, bringing with it the possibility of thunderstorms that may become strong to severe, capable of producing isolated damaging wind gusts and perhaps “a tornado or two.” The weather service says a “slight (level 2 out of 5) risk of severe weather is forecast for portions of extreme western Georgia along the state line.” The storms should have lost some of their punch before they reach northeast and east central Georgia, but the potential is still there for some strong storms.
“Due to the timing of potential storms, residents are advised to ensure the alert feature is working on their weather radios (cell phones) tonight,” NWS says.
