Longtime north Georgians will probably remember when Atlanta was considering locating a second airport in Dawson or Paulding counties. The city went as far in the 1970s to buy two, 10,000-acres sites, one in each county, in anticipation of locating a second airport on one of them. And has held onto each since then.
Now, though, the sites, both of which have been managed as public recreation areas since 1975, may end up in state hands. The AJC reports that the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has offered to buy them for $100 million and put them into permanent conservation.
Mayor Andrew Dickens says the city is still “analyzing” the offer. And a spokeswoman for DNR acknowledges that the offer has been made.
