GCSS to opt out of HB 581; public hearings planned

The Gainesville City School System (GCSS) plans to opt out of House Bill 581, a statewide property tax reform bill passed by the state legislature. This decision was made after careful consideration of the potential impacts of a statewide bill and a local bill (HB 1271), according to a news release.

“While HB 581 aims to provide property tax relief, it also creates a duplicate reassessment cap competing with a new local legislation passed by the voters in November,” the release continues. “By opting out, Gainesville City School System seeks to support HB 1271 and the local 3% reassessment cap on homestead properties.”
