Census Bureau releases income, poverty level for school districts

The median estimated poverty rate of children ages 5 to 17 in the Hall County School District (HCSD) is 12.4 percent, according to data released recently by the U.S. Census Bureau. For the Gainesville City School System (GCSS) the rate is 17.5 percent.

The new data come from the 2023 Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates report, which will be used to allocate federal funding for Title I and several other programs in the 2025-2026 school year.

Among other school districts in the immediate Gainesville area, Lumpkin County has the highest rate, 15.8 percent, and Forsyth, the lowest, 4.6 percent.
