Top honors for Gville SSU grad; Buford PETA protest

*During Savannah State University’s (SSU) recent fall commencement, Interim President Cynthia Robinson Alexander presented the university’s top academic award to Luke Sanders of Gainesville. A student athlete and civil engineering technology major, Sanders started at SSU in 2021 and graduated with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0.

*Three PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) protesters dressed as elves and an “elephant” Santa were detained by police for nearly two hours after an incident in Buford Thursday night, according to the PETA website. The trio had dumped three wheelbarrows full of coal on the front lawn of a Shriners International official. The action was part of PETA’s campaign urging Shriners to make their circuses animal-free—just as Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and other circuses have done. One of the protesters was cited with “Public Dumping,” PETA said.
