As it prepares to take its case for a 1,000-acre rock quarry to the Jackson County Board of Commissioners (JCBOC), Vulcan Materials has gone on the offensive, declaring in a Facebook post that “Every aspect of the proposed East Jackson County Quarry is designed to ensure a respectful, safe and environmentally responsible operation…”
That includes, the posting says, the location of small mining area within our large property and how we plan to use it.
This development follows a petition drive that got underway recently, denouncing Vulcan’s plans and calling on the county commission to reject them. Petition started in opposition to rock quarry The Jackson County Planning Commission (JCPC) has recommended to the county commission that the proposal be rejected.
“For nearly two years, we’ve been working with stakeholders, listening to our neighbors and the community to develop a comprehensive proposal that creates community benefits and maintains the quality of life and character of Jackson County,” Vulcan says. “Unlike other proposals presented to the County, our project will not require ANY taxpayer subsidies and will not strain local government services. Our commitments, community safeguards, protections and benefits are now memorialized in a binding Community Benefits Development Agreement.”
